Applying for a scholarship it very easy and convenient and living the chinese student life doesn’t cost a fortune. You can easily live off of 1.000-4.000 RMB per month depending on your individual needs. And when you are afraid of being homesick: just imagine how study abroad in 1980 must have been. No Internet, No Email, No Videochat, No website informing you about everything, no “Move to China” book. Don’t be afraid. Study aborad can feel like studying in a different city in your home country. Depending on where you are from you can usually be back home within 24 hours when you cant stand it at all – I can not find any reason not to go for studies to China. Do it! (no, I am not getting paid from Chinese Government or Universities to write that)
To answer the most important question, how to apply for a scholarship in China I want to recommend you the official Chinese Government webpage that provides all latest information regarding Chinese scholarships. Instead of just copying all information from the homepage and keeping this post up to date please visit https://www.cscscholarship.org/ for latest information.
Getting a scholarship from Chinese Government is not to only way to get one. Of course you can also apply for a scholarship in your home country. As there are many countries out there I cannot cover every single one. But make sure to Google every possibility to find a scholarship in your country. In my home nation, Germany, we have a lot of variety of scholarships. There are Government supported scholarships but also ones from associations, political parties, companies and even privat people supporting young people to study abroad. I am sure you home country offers something similar.
If you can’t find any information in your contry on how to apply for a scholarship try the best method ever, when wanting something: find someone who is there, where you want to be. Why study in China will be the best choice of your life
China is on the way becoming again the strongest economic nation on the world. This means a study time in China will boost your CV for your whole live! And when you take the challenge to learn Chinese on a intermediate level you will even more benefit from it. I do not believe that in 10-20 years there will be any company out there that can ignore China and be successul. If you want to have a job guarantee go to China. I am 100% convinced every HR associate/manager/agent or what ever you want to call it will appreciate your knowledge about China, Chinese culture, Chinese history, Chinese language and manners. I myself am the best role model for this statement. Whenever I meet Chinese customers at work an welcome them in Mandarin the atmosphere increase sky high. Believe it or not: Your knowledge about China will be your USP and always seperate you from the rest in a positive way.
Costs of living as a student in China
As already mentioned the costs of living in China can be very low. Apart from a dorm or own flat you can live off of 1.000-4.000 RMB a month. Depending on the city you are staying a bowl of noodle soup that can feed you for a whole evenint costs between 3-10 RMB. Even in cities like Shanghai or Beijing food is still very cheap and recommendable. And if you start cooking on your own you will even need less money than that. I was stunned when I came back from my first grocery shopping in China. I had my cart nearly full an did not pay more than 70 RMB for a few day food shopping.
A lot of universities offer very cheap foreign accomondation. To get the full experience I recommend you to live in a 4 person Chinese style student dorm. This might sound crazy, but thats how millions of Chinese student live their live and I don’t think it’s a bad thing. You will learn to live in a limited space enviroment and learn to appreciate everything you will have afterwards more.
